It was only recently that I came across MAWI jewellery. Thanks to KOOVS and MAWI collaboration, I had a chance to witness the “oh so gorgeous MAWI collection “at the London Fashion Weekend a few months back.
Before I eulogize the bold and creative jewellery, let me present a brief introduction to Mawi Keivom.
She was born in Manipur in the north east of India. Her inspiration comes from where she belongs -“I lived all over the world, and it’s shaped my aesthetic. The tribal cultures [of Manipur] are very different, people wear sarong, they wear coral and feathers in their hair. If someone didn’t tell you, you might think you were in Peru or Mexico, or people would think you were an American Indian. All the statement pieces are probably secretly inspired by tribal jewellery.”
Mawi combines contemporary style with traditional and tribal. Big shiny stones and a lot of punk is her style. MAWI offers so much to love to a fashion enthusiast like me ; spikes , panthers, skulls and tribal details are some of the favourites. “I’m into punk in terms of music,” she says. “And that whole era inspires me. I’ve always been rebellious – I went to a Catholic school and wanted to do everything that was against the rules. I like that whole aesthetic, not conforming and breaking boundaries.”
“I’m very much about tradition as well, it’s about mixing it up with this rebellious edge.”Metal is used boldly with stones such that every piece looks rebellious.
And Mawi is championing the style that bring contrasting elements together to create a striking combination.
This is quite evident in how punk-inspired jewellery marries so cordially with traditional Indian outfit just as well as with western. Such styling will become more common in India because jewellery scene is witnessing a sweeping change as girls are far more willing to experiment in unconventional and bold ways. They don’t mind sporting a spiky necklace over the traditional saree. What most of the jewellery designers are doing now,she did a long time ago.
The spring 2015 collection is all about bejewelled bugs and roses. Only Mawi can make a bug look so pretty on girl’s neck. The funky bug ring is my personal fav.Don’t miss out her uber cool clutches. They were quite a hit at the runway. Her jewellery can be bought online or in London as she is based out of London. You can shop online from here-http://www.mawi.co.uk/
